Year: 2018
Location: Mayfair, London, UK
Client: Grosvenor
Size: 25,000 m²
Status: ideas competition
We took on the challenge, Grosvenor set in their competition, of “re-imagining” Grosvenor Square. We focused on clarifying the urban identity of the space and creating an urban event to make the square a destination.
Our proposal aims to restore urban clarity in the square. We proposed unifying the public space surrounding the garden with a single public surface, from corner to corner, of one consistent material. In this way the garden will become more important, the centrepiece of a large public space, as it clearly differentiates from the surrounding.
We proposed the garden to become the art piece itself. Environmental, bio and land artists will be invited annually to produce a site-specific installation, so the “event” at Grosvenor Square will constantly renew itself providing a renew experience for visitors.
EcoLogicStudio (Installation “0”)
We asked EcologicStudio to imagine what an environmental art installation in the garden of Grosvenor Square could look like. Their proposal displays a series of pools where “physarum polycephalum” grows. The installation promotes the idea that understanding complex biological processes can help us shape future technologies.
